Merck, the pharmaceutical manufacturer, was working to move from traditional batch production to continuous manufacturing at its Cramlington, UK facility. The challenge was to build process knowledge, reduce scale-up and transfer issues, and support faster release testing in a highly regulated environment. To do this, Merck used the OSIsoft PI System data infrastructure and piloted Seeq analytics to make sense of its data-rich tablet manufacturing process.

Seeq helped Merck analyze data from feeders, blenders, tablet press, and coater operations through interactive dashboards, advanced analytics, and knowledge management tools. With Seeq, Merck could filter bad signals, study upstream and downstream relationships, identify early warning indicators, and support preventive maintenance and process robustness. The effort is expected to cut release testing from up to two weeks to about one day, while improving visibility, collaboration, and continuous process optimization.
