Major Oil & Gas Company - Customer Case Study

Seeq Corporation helped a major oil & gas company address a challenge in its upstream oil collection networks, where emergency shutdown (ESD) events could trigger rapid valve closure and cause damaging water hammer. The company needed a way to proactively find where pressure hammering occurred across many assets so it could focus redesign efforts and reduce mechanical, safety, and environmental risks.

Using Seeq’s Asset Capabilities with OSIsoft PI and OSIsoft Asset Framework data, Seeq Corporation automated the detection of water hammer by analyzing pressure-wave periodicity, amplitude decay, and proximity to ESD events. The solution enabled engineers to identify affected assets from historic data, prioritize inspection and maintenance, and move from reactive to proactive management, reducing downtime-related losses of 40,000 STB, or about $2 million per day, while also saving two days of engineering time per incident.
