A Sedex Case Study
Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils is an Australian manufacturer of sandalwood oil based in Kalgoorlie, operating as a 50:50 partnership with local Indigenous custodians and WA Sandalwood Plantations to sustainably source oil for global perfume markets. As the business and its buyer base grew, Dutjahn faced increasing customer demands to demonstrate labour, health & safety and sustainability practices and was repeatedly completing duplicate questionnaires — a particular challenge for a remote supplier seeking stronger links with buyers and suppliers. Sedex (via its platform and Sedex Self-Assessment Questionnaire) was introduced to address this need.
Using the Sedex platform and the Sedex Self-Assessment Questionnaire, Dutjahn consolidated sustainability reporting into a single, comprehensive submission, reducing duplication and improving supply-chain transparency while helping connect Indigenous communities with international buyers. Sedex enabled clearer buyer–supplier collaboration, expanded global awareness of Dutjahn’s ethical sourcing, and delivered tangible recognition — Dutjahn won “Best Collaborative Effort” at the 2019 Sedex Responsible Business Awards and was a Sedex Conference 2019 keynote speaker about empowering Indigenous communities through sustainable business.
