Testing In-Store Devices For Network Cybersecurity - Customer Case Study

A rural wireless carrier engaged SecureWorks to determine whether the mobile devices on display in its retail stores could be used by visitors to compromise its networks. The carrier contracted SecureWorks’ Advanced Penetration Testing service from the Security & Risk Consulting team to run a focused, real‑world assessment of this specific in‑store attack vector.

SecureWorks’ testers used proprietary techniques and state‑of‑the‑art tools on display iOS and Android devices to attempt network breaches, validating that the carrier’s in‑store cyberdefenses would prevent such an attack, providing evidence to support PCI compliance, and raising awareness of the threat. As a result, SecureWorks strengthened the carrier’s assurance that in‑store hack risk is virtually nil and was invited to advise the parent company’s executives, opening new opportunities for further testing, PCI gap analysis, incident response retainers and managed security services.
