Federal Police pilots Smart Borders for 9 months with Secunet Security Networks

The Federal Police, a German federal police force, faced the challenge of testing and implementing new EU-mandated border control processes and technologies for non-EU citizens, known as the Smart Borders initiative. To securely access the protected data in modern identity documents, their border control readers required digital certificates. They engaged vendor secunet to implement the necessary Document Verifying Certification Authority (DVCA) system.

secunet implemented the DVCA certification instance for the Federal Police, which centrally issues the required digital certificates. The solution also included seamlessly connecting the system to the Terminal Control Centre (TCC) and managing cryptographic functions and key management. This allowed the entire certificate exchange process to run fully automated. As a result, secunet provided a highly reliable and stable system that was critical for the sovereign task of border control, enabling Germany to be the only EU member to fully test the new processes end-to-end.
