A Second Canvas Case Study
Banqueting House needed a reflection-free, ultra-high-resolution record of Rubens’s nine ceiling paintings (installed 1635) but faced difficult illumination: large daylight windows, reflections from ceiling lights and a 16-metre-high roof. Second Canvas was engaged to deliver high-resolution photographic documentation using tailored capture and lighting protocols.
Second Canvas ran a two-night capture—an initial full sweep with supplemental lights (1,220 RAW captures, final roof composite of 942 photos) and a second night focused on the paintings using only their lighting (494 RAW captures). In post-production Second Canvas produced a final composite from 1,313 super high-resolution photographs yielding an image of 174,419 x 85,644 pixels (≈14,700 megapixels) with the paintings free of reflections.
