IOTA Uses ScyllaDB to Scale a Distributed Ledger for IoT

IOTA, an open-source distributed ledger and cryptocurrency foundation for the Internet of Things, needed a way to store Tangle transaction history persistently without overwhelming resource-constrained nodes. While local snapshots helped reduce storage needs, real-world use cases such as financial and identity data required long-term retention for auditability and compliance. IOTA turned to ScyllaDB as the storage foundation for its Chronicle permanode.

ScyllaDB provided IOTA with a scalable, distributed database that met its requirements for fault tolerance, consistency, high write throughput, TTL support, and low operating costs. Built on ScyllaDB’s shared-nothing architecture and shard-aware driver support, Chronicle became ready, stable, and “rock solid,” enabling IOTA to scale its Tangle Explorer and support indefinite access to transaction history.
