Happn - Customer Case Study

Happn, a popular global dating app with over 128 million users, faced significant challenges with its legacy Apache Cassandra database. Issues included a high total cost of ownership, technical debt from running outdated software, difficulties managing massive data growth, and problematic latencies. To support its real-time matching services, Happn needed a more robust and efficient database solution.

Happn chose to migrate to ScyllaDB, a high-performance NoSQL database. The solution involved moving fourteen clusters, including a complex counters table with 68 billion records. After a successful migration, ScyllaDB delivered dramatically lower latencies, with P99 times dropping from 80ms to 20ms. It also reduced storage needs by two-thirds, allowing the largest cluster's footprint to shrink from 48 to 6 nodes. Ultimately, ScyllaDB enabled Happn to reduce its total cost of ownership by 75%.
