A ScyllaDB Case Study
GPS Insight, a provider of fleet intelligence that collects time-series machine data from vehicles and assets, struggled to scale on its legacy SAP ASE relational database as data volumes grew. Relational queries were slow and cumbersome (requiring temporary tables), clustering was difficult to maintain, and the system couldn’t handle the high-volume time-series load. To address these issues GPS Insight evaluated alternatives and selected ScyllaDB as a high-performance, more manageable NoSQL option.
GPS Insight ran a POC comparing a 7-node Cassandra cluster to a 3-node ScyllaDB cluster and found dramatic gains: loading 90 days of diagnostics took Cassandra five days but ScyllaDB less than one, and ScyllaDB handled 60 TB (12:1 compressed) under heavy concurrent gateway load without performance spikes. The migration to ScyllaDB was straightforward, enabled bypassing most stored procedures (shrinking the Sybase footprint), and delivered much greater stability and easier operations; GPS Insight also praised ScyllaDB’s responsive support.
