Case Study: Cobli simplifies its Cassandra-to-ScyllaDB migration with ScyllaDB

Dissecting a Real-Life Database Migration Process

Cobli, a fleet monitoring company, needed to migrate a large time-series workload from Apache Cassandra to ScyllaDB while avoiding disruption to many dependent systems, including nearly 20 Apache Flink streaming jobs. Their constraints included a short timeline, the need to preserve service availability and latency, and the challenge of coordinating the change across the company.

ScyllaDB worked with Cobli on a more direct “stop-the-world” migration strategy tailored to Cobli’s immutable time-series data: backfilling historical data in the background, then pausing services on a planned maintenance window to migrate the remaining data and cut over to ScyllaDB. This approach reduced migration complexity and cost, improved predictability, and was expected to complete in about one month, avoiding the longer dual-write period that would have been required by the standard ScyllaDB migration path.
