Royal HaskoningDHV engineers Rotterdam Markthal with SCIA: 120 x 90 m structure and 36 m spanning apartments

Royal HaskoningDHV, an international engineering consultancy, faced the complex challenge of designing the unique Markthal in Rotterdam. Their task was to engineer the complete structure, including a large cable-net facade and a superstructure integrated with a deep underground car park, all while optimizing for cost to ensure project feasibility. They utilized SCIA Engineer from vendor SCIA to model the entire 3D building and analyze the complex interactions between all structural elements.

Using SCIA Engineer, Royal HaskoningDHV implemented a solution that involved a monolithic superstructure and a highly optimized substructure capable of withstanding significant water pressure and settlement. The non-linear analysis of the cable-net facade helped reduce both construction time and costs. The successful use of SCIA's software was instrumental in delivering an optimized final design for this award-winning, technically interesting project.
