A SCIA Case Study
Jan De Nul Group, along with architects and contractors, faced the complex engineering challenge of building a first-of-its-kind glass and steel dome in Knokke, Belgium. The structure utilized a unique 'jigsaw' assembly without traditional welding or screws, requiring precise modeling of its flexible framework and nonlinear connections to ensure stability. To address this, they utilized the advanced structural analysis software SCIA Engineer.
SCIA provided the critical solution through SCIA Engineer, enabling a sophisticated third-order nonlinear analysis that accounted for real-world imperfections and complex load combinations. The software's tools, including spreadsheet input for wind loads and rapid steel member assessment, allowed the team to accurately model and validate the innovative design. This resulted in the successful realization of the iconic 7-meter radius dome, which transformed Albert Square into a public landmark while solving local parking needs by covering an underground facility.
