A SCIA Case Study
The customer, Eurosilo, required the construction of 16 new vertical grain silos in the Port of Ghent, a project managed by engineering firm VK. The key engineering challenges included managing differential deformation and settlements due to varying fill levels, accounting for extreme temperature differences of up to 71°C, and designing for peak pressures from potential dust explosions. They utilized SCIA and its software, SCIA Engineer, to address these complex structural analyses.
SCIA's solution involved using SCIA Engineer for comprehensive analysis, including global stability, soil-structure interaction, and thermal and explosion load effects. The software's Revit-link enabled fast modeling and drawing. This approach allowed for the design of a modular steel structure for efficient assembly and very thin silo walls to mitigate thermal stress, optimizing a structure involving 750 tons of steel and 20,000 m³ of concrete. The work by SCIA enabled the successful engineering and timely construction of the large-scale silo complex.
