A SCIA Case Study
Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH, a leader in ropeway engineering, faced the challenge of designing the world's first 3S cable car lift with a curved alignment. This innovation required a lattice tower capable of resisting immense forces, including a vertical rope pressure of 1,800 kN and a horizontal force of 600 kN at a height of 42 meters. To accomplish this, they utilized SCIA Engineer software for the structural design and analysis.
SCIA provided a flexible and functional solution, enabling Doppelmayr to easily create a model of the complex tower and perform all necessary steel and stability checks within the software. The SCIA Engineer model also supplied the internal forces needed to verify the connections via external calculations. As a result, the 45-meter-high tower was successfully built to withstand the extreme moments of 60,000 and 55,000 kNm at its base, forming an integral part of the innovative Penken lift system.
