Westar Energy improves reliability and saves 210,000 customer minutes with SEL
Westar Energy, an investor-owned utility, sought to improve system reliability and reduce energy losses. They participated in a Department of Energy Smart Grid project to pilot new technology across 20 distribution circuits. Their challenge was to minimize outages and restoration times. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) provided its Distribution Network Automation (DNA) system as the solution.
The SEL solution implemented automated fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR) along with volt/VAR control. This system interfaced cost-effectively with Westar's existing equipment and energy management system. The results included significantly improved reliability, with the system handling multiple faults and saving approximately 210,000 customer minutes interrupted. Westar also achieved improved operating efficiency and reduced system losses.
