Vietnam Electricity cuts substation modernization costs by $495,000 with SEL

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) worked with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to address the high cost and labor requirements of modernizing a large 500 kV substation in Ho Chi Minh City. A traditional modernization for a substation of this size required 280,000 meters of copper conductors, costing nearly $650,000 in materials and installation and taking a team of 12 workers 120 days to complete.

The SEL solution, implemented with integrator ATS, used fiber optics and placed durable SEL relays in the yard near primary equipment. This approach drastically reduced the reliance on copper. For EVN, the results included an 80% reduction in copper conductor use, a 77% reduction in material costs, and a 75% reduction in installation time. SEL's solution saved the customer $495,000 on a single substation modernization.
