Vietnam Electricity boosts substation reliability with SEL relays for 10+ years

Vietnam Electricity (EVN) faced the challenge of modernizing its substations to meet the country's growing power demand. The project needed to reduce high costs and long commissioning times, which was complicated by the need for equipment that could withstand Vietnam's harsh environment of high humidity, extreme heat, and monsoons. To address this, EVN worked with vendor Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to use their durable relays.

The solution involved placing SEL relays in outdoor yard cabinets near primary equipment, which significantly lowered costs and commissioning time. Using fiber-optic cables instead of copper conductors made the system more reliable by eliminating weather-related faults. As a result, problems are detected and mitigated immediately. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories relays have proven highly durable, with no environmental failures in over ten years of operation.
