Vietnam Electricity Achieves Reliability in Harsh Environments With SEL Relays in the Yard

Vietnam Electricity (EVN) needed to modernize and expand substations to meet rising power demand in Vietnam, but traditional approaches were costly and time-consuming. Working with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), EVN sought a way to place relays in the yard so they could operate reliably in Vietnam’s hot, humid, monsoon-prone environment.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) provided durable SEL relays installed in yard cabinets near the primary equipment, with ATS using fiber-optic cables to connect them to the control house and reduce copper use. This cut modernization costs and commissioning time, improved reliability by removing underground copper conductors, and, after more than ten years in service, the relays had experienced no environmental failures.
