Case Study: POWERGRID Corporation improves system reliability with SEL synchrophasor monitoring

A Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) Case Study

Preview of the POWERGRID Corporation Case Study

Using Wide-Area Synchrophasor Measurements to Improve System Reliability

POWERGRID Corporation, one of the world’s largest transmission utilities, needed better insight into operating conditions across its northern grid to manage long-distance power transfers and reduce the risk of large-scale outages. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) worked with POWERGRID to provide a wide-area synchrophasor measurement system using SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Control Systems with PMU capability, along with supporting clocks, processing software, and communications hardware.

SEL installed and commissioned PMUs at four key substations and integrated them with SEL-3378 Synchrophasor Vector Processor and SEL-5078 SYNCHROWAVE Console Software at the Northern Regional Load Dispatch Center. The solution gave POWERGRID real-time visibility into voltage, current, frequency, power, and system dynamics, helping engineers set operating limits, diagnose disturbances, and develop contingency plans to reduce outages and customer impact.
