Tohono O'odham Utility Authority trips faults in under 2 ms with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories
The customer, the Tohono O'odham Utility Authority (TOUA), faced significant challenges providing reliable power across its vast, remote desert territory due to frequent and damaging microburst storms. These weather events caused persistent outages, requiring long and difficult repair efforts from their small crew. To modernize their aging equipment, they partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) and installed the SEL-T400L relay.
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories implemented its time-domain SEL-T400L relay, which provides unprecedented tripping speed and includes traveling-wave fault location. Shortly after installation, the relay was successfully tested during a storm, clearing seven faults in just over 30 minutes without causing any customer outages. This result saved the utility considerable time and money by preventing lengthy restoration efforts and secured system reliability for the future.
