Spain Achieves Superior Transmission Protection and Monitoring

Red Eléctrica de España, Spain’s transmission grid owner and operator, faced major protection challenges across its long, heavily loaded 220 kV and 400 kV network, including frequent out-of-step conditions, instability from wind power, and the complexity of single-pole switching. To improve system stability and protect its transmission system, the utility turned to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) and its SEL-421 Protection, Automation, and Control System Relay.

SEL installed about 2,500 SEL-421 relays across Red Eléctrica de España’s grid, adding advanced protection features such as secure subcycle distance protection, single-pole tripping, and out-of-step blocking and tripping, along with synchrophasor measurements. As a result, Red Eléctrica de España can monitor system behavior in near real time, improving stability, control, and protection across its transmission network.
