Self-Healing Network Restores Power Fast

Mississippi Power Company, a Southern Company utility serving 190,000 customers in Alabama and Mississippi, needed a faster way to restore power after hurricanes and other outages along the Gulf Coast. The company, which had already been working with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), was interested in self-healing network technology and was using SEL-351R Recloser Controls in its system.

Mississippi Power partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to deploy a DNA distribution network automation solution across 11 feeder pilot projects, using more than 300 SEL-651R Advanced Recloser Controls with an SEL Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC)-based control system. Since implementation in 2013, the self-healing network has significantly improved reliability and helped avoid an estimated 3,257,861 customer outage minutes over five years; in one incident, it restored power to 1,900 of 2,200 affected customers within seconds.
