SEL Helps Nucor Steel Keep Rolling

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) worked with Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in the United States, to support power reliability at its Decatur, Alabama steel mill. Nucor needed to upgrade GIS Unit 9 within a very tight 3.5-day outage window and in a cramped space that required moving equipment by crane, making the installation especially difficult.

SEL provided a complete switchgear protection and HMI solution using SEL-751 Feeder Protection Relays, SEL-735 Power Quality and Revenue Meters, and IEC 61850 networking, along with engineering services and onsite commissioning support. SEL’s approach reduced commissioning time by more than 40%, cut wiring and footprint requirements, improved power system visibility, and helped Nucor complete the project on time and under budget.
