SEL Brings NamPower Into 21st Century

NamPower, Namibia’s electric utility, needed to modernize its HV and EHV transmission substations to improve reliability across a vast desert service area where field troubleshooting can take a long time. The utility wanted a flexible IEC 61850-based communications approach for automation and advanced substation control, and worked with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) and its consulting partner CONCO Energy Solutions.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) implemented an automated substation solution using Ethernet communications and IEC 61850, including SEL relays and later SEL synchroWAVe Central Software. The new system delivered fully compliant IEC 61850 functionality, reduced hardwired connections, improved SCADA visibility with more granular data and proactive alerts, and simplified testing, documentation, and implementation, helping reduce project cost while supporting NamPower’s future growth and improving operational reliability.
