Relay’s Event Reports Offer Powerful Data for Diagnosing Power System Problems

Conway Corporation, the city-owned utility serving Conway, Arkansas, needed help diagnosing a voltage problem affecting an industrial customer on one of its feeders. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) relays, including SEL-351S and SEL-551 devices, provided event reports and oscillographs that gave technicians the data needed to investigate the issue.

Using SEL’s event report analysis tools, Conway Corporation and SEL field support traced the problem to a failing transformer tap changer with severely worn contacts that was arcing on the C-phase. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) helped identify the fault early, preventing a possible transformer fire, avoiding a sustained outage, and reducing the risk of damage to customer equipment from single-phasing.
