Red Eléctrica de España deploys 2,500 SEL relays to boost transmission stability

Red Eléctrica de España, the transmission grid owner and operator for Spain, faced significant system protection challenges due to complex transmission lines, the erratic nature of their substantial wind power generation, and the requirements of single-pole switching. To address these issues and improve system stability, they turned to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) for an advanced protection and monitoring solution.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories implemented a solution using approximately 2,500 SEL-421 Protection, Automation, and Control System Relays. This provided advanced capabilities including secure subcycle distance protection and out-of-step blocking. The key result was the ability to measure system behavior in near real time using the relays' synchrophasor measurements, which significantly improved system stability and provided comprehensive, reliable protection for the Spanish grid.
