Puget Sound Energy (PSE) faced a challenge ensuring reliable power for a critical community fire station on Samish Island, which is frequently exposed to severe weather and prolonged grid outages. To address this vulnerability, PSE collaborated with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to implement a solution using the SEL powerMAX Microgrid Control System.
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories installed a microgrid control system that managed a battery energy storage system and photovoltaic sources. This solution successfully islanded from the main grid during multiple storm-related outages, providing hours of reliable power to the fire station and neighboring homes. The SEL system maintained stable voltage and frequency, seamlessly reconnected to the grid upon restoration, and managed the recharging of the energy storage, ensuring resilience for the community.
