Nucor Corporation, the largest steel producer in the United States, faced a challenge at its Decatur, Alabama mill. They needed to upgrade a gas insulated switchgear unit within an extremely tight 3.5-day outage window and under significant space constraints. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) was engaged to provide a streamlined protection and HMI solution.
SEL implemented a simplified protection scheme using SEL-751 Feeder Protection Relays and SEL-735 Power Quality Meters, along with IEC 61850 networking to drastically reduce wiring. Their approach, which included offsite preassembly and an abbreviated commissioning plan, cut Nucor's standard commissioning time by over 40%. The results for Nucor included a smaller equipment footprint, significantly reduced installation time, and better power system visibility with improved protection.
