NamPower, Namibia's national electric utility, faced challenges in providing reliable power across its expansive desert territory. Extensive travel was required to resolve issues, so they sought to modernize their high-voltage substations with a flexible automation solution using the emerging IEC 61850 protocol. They partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to implement this upgrade.
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories provided an automated substation solution using advanced SEL relays and Ethernet communications with IEC 61850. The key results were a significant reduction in wiring by migrating from hardwired connections and the ability to capture granular data to proactively alert their SCADA system before problems occur. This modern solution provided NamPower with greater situational awareness and enhanced the security and reliability of their entire power system.
