A Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) Case Study
AEP Texas, part of American Electric Power, needed a way to optimize power flow on its South Texas transmission grid using new 138 kV phase-shifting transformers while ensuring reliable protection and safe, automated operation. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) supplied the protection and control technology, including an SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Control System with SEL-2100 Logic Processor support, to manage the PSTs and replace manual operation with automated control.
SEL engineered and programmed a control system that could automatically regulate tap-changers to a megawatt set point, prevent invalid switching sequences, detect improper tap operation and overload conditions, and integrate with SCADA and local controls. The solution added adaptive bandwidth control to reduce hunting and improve regulation, enabling AEP Texas to safely use the PSTs to better manage transmission power flow and take fuller advantage of existing grid assets until new lines are built.
