GRIDCo deploys 9 PMUs with SEL to strengthen grid monitoring
The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo), the operator of Ghana's national transmission system, sought an advanced solution to monitor its power grid across a large geographical area. Their challenge was to ensure stability and prevent cascading outages on lines connected to neighboring countries. To enhance visibility and ensure reliable power delivery, GRIDCo partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) for a synchrophasor technology solution.
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories implemented a wide-area monitoring system by turning GRIDCo's existing SEL relays into Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) across nine substations. This provided real-time grid insights monitored centrally with SEL's Synchrowave software. As a result, GRIDCo gained deeper insights into grid disturbances, enhanced event analysis, and became a regional leader in grid modernization, using the installation as an educational resource for other utilities.
