Eletrobras Furnas reliably transmits power for 2 million households with SEL

Eletrobras Furnas, a power utility in Brazil, faced a significant challenge at its HVdc converter station. The utility had no way to accurately measure the heat generated by harmonics within its filter banks, which was damaging equipment and threatening the stability of the Brazilian power grid. This jeopardized the reliable transmission of energy from the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. Eletrobras Furnas reached out to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) for a solution.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) developed a custom protection scheme using SELogic control equations implemented in SEL-734 Revenue Meters and SEL-451 Protection Relays. This solution could separate load levels at different harmonic frequencies to precisely calculate the heat generated. As a result, harmonic filtration became smooth and overcurrent protection became reliable, ensuring the stable and continuous transmission of energy that benefits over two million households.
