Duke Energy achieves resilient microgrid service since 2015 with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) partnered with Duke Energy Corporation to address the challenge of severe weather events causing widespread power outages. Duke Energy sought to implement a microgrid at its McAlpine Creek Substation to ensure a reliable and resilient power supply for critical services, using standard utility distribution equipment and off-the-shelf components.

The solution implemented by SEL centered on its Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) and the SEL-651R Advanced Recloser Control. These fast-acting SEL components provided the sophisticated control and protection algorithms needed to manage the microgrid's energy balance and stability. As a result, the microgrid has successfully provided peak shaving and a resilient energy supply, operating both manually and automatically to maintain power during outages. Duke Energy now plans to use the lessons and standard SEL equipment from this project to standardize the development of future microgrids.
