Drillship Solves Power Challenge and Saves Big

Jasper Offshore, operator of the Jasper Explorer drillship, was facing a serious power management challenge that limited the vessel to 60 percent of its rated capacity. Because the ship’s dynamic positioning system was not receiving enough real-time power information, SEL was brought in through Jasper’s electrical consultant to help find a fast, cost-effective solution using its power management and communications expertise.

SEL worked with a Jasper Offshore consultant and a local system integrator to implement a communications and automation solution that gave the DP system real-time power plant data, including kVAR and amps. With the SEL solution in place, the Jasper Explorer was able to return to full capacity, increasing power output by 40 percent, improving productivity, and avoiding a major overhaul. The system improvements paid back in less than one day of operation.
