Davao Light, a power distribution utility in the Philippines, faced the challenge of modernizing its substations with a digital secondary system to improve reliability and reduce costs. The utility was committed to this innovation but needed to ensure its engineers could maintain and improve the new technology without outsourcing key knowledge. They partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) for training and to implement an IEC 61850-based design.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories provided comprehensive training on IEC 61850 standards and supplied devices like the SEL-2740S network switch and SEL-421 protection system. This solution enabled Davao Light to successfully commission multiple new substations with improved reliability and safety, even during the pandemic. The results included a reduced physical footprint from replacing copper wiring with fiber-optic cable, greater system visibility, and the ability to quickly restore power to customers.
