City Utilities of Springfield saves $192,000 with SEL's modern WAN upgrade

City Utilities of Springfield, an electric utility, faced the challenge of an outdated and complicated communications system that relied on a failing T1 multiplexer and intolerant HCB relays. They turned to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) for a solution to modernize their network and improve performance.

SEL implemented a solution using their SEL ICON with an IEEE C37.94 interface and recommended upgrading to SEL-387L relays. This allowed the utility to simplify its network from eight rings to three and eliminate expensive copper wiring. The project resulted in a significant cost savings of $192,000 by reducing the number of nodes, while also delivering the high-performance communications required for their protection circuits. City Utilities was very pleased with both the modernized system and the service from SEL.
