Busbar Protection Made Simpler and Safer With Innovative TiDL Technology

Enel-Codensa, one of Colombia’s major electric utilities, needed a safer way to upgrade busbar protection at its hydroelectric facilities. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) stepped in with its Time-Domain Link (TiDL) technology to replace a conventional copper-based design that was difficult to implement because the substation yard and control room were separated by the Bogotá River.

SEL implemented TiDL using lightweight fiber-optic point-to-point communications to send power system measurements from the yard to the relays in the control house. The solution eliminated the need for new suspended ducts across the river, simplified installation and commissioning, improved cybersecurity, and increased safety for control-house personnel while modernizing the bus protection scheme.
