Brownfield Power and Light, a utility in Texas, faced frequent power outages due to high winds and needed a cost-effective SCADA system for remote monitoring and control of its substation. Their challenge was to implement this new system for under $50,000. They worked with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to find a solution using their existing SEL-351S protection relays.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories implemented a solution using an SEL-3530 Real-Time Automation Controller and SEL-3031 Serial Radio Transceivers. The project was completed under budget in just four days. The results allowed personnel to remotely operate breakers, monitor and shift loads, and analyze system events, achieving the utility's main goal of full SCADA control for under $50,000.
