AEP Ohio improves outage response for 1.5 million people with SEL

AEP Ohio, a utility serving 1.5 million customers, sought to improve efficiency and respond to outages more quickly on its distribution system. To meet this challenge, they partnered with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to deploy a smart grid automation project.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories implemented a solution using an SEL-3555 Real-Time Automation Controller as a Distribution Automation Controller (DAC). The DAC automatically isolates faults and restores power to non-faulted line sections, significantly improving reliability. As a result, AEP Ohio can now restore outages before customers report them and save money by retrieving data and programming reclosers remotely instead of dispatching crews.
