Preview of the Global Auto Manufacturer Case Study

a global auto manufacturer cuts arc-flash trip time to under 10 milliseconds with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories

A global auto manufacturer faced a significant safety challenge while expanding its U.S. plant, as the annual maintenance on its energized power system presented a dangerous arc-flash hazard to personnel. To design a state-of-the-art and safer system, the manufacturer turned to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) for a solution.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories implemented an innovative protection scheme using an SEL-3555 Real-Time Automation Controller and SEL-751A Feeder Protection Relays. This solution detects and mitigates arc-flash events by tripping breakers in less than 10 milliseconds, drastically reducing risk. The results significantly improved safety, allowed for remote maintenance, and provided reliable power. The impact was so positive that the manufacturer retrofitted its original plant with the same SEL equipment.
