Technology Improves Support of Teaching and Learning without Expanding IT Staff

Universidad Metropolitana de Monterrey (UMM) is a private international university in northeast Mexico with more than 17,000 students. After a 2009 flu pandemic forced campus closures, UMM needed a way to maintain faculty‑student communication, deliver courses remotely, notify students of campus changes, and do all this with a small, not‑highly technical IT staff and many faculty unfamiliar with online tools.

UMM adopted Schoology’s cloud‑based LMS, which required no new hardware, was localized to Spanish, and offloaded hosting and maintenance to the vendor; the university supplemented this with a six‑hour hands‑on faculty training. As a result, a small tech team now supports efficient course management, online grading, attendance and assessments; communication and continuity during closures have improved; and more blended and online course options have made teaching and learning more accessible, convenient, and effective.
