Sydney Trains Network - Customer Case Study

Sydney Trains Network, which carries more than one million commuters every weekday, faced ageing 11kV switchgear in its Redfern Substation (original Brown Boveri RGB12 switches and fuses) and needed a fast, space-constrained upgrade that would not disrupt services. They engaged Schneider Electric to deliver a compact, future‑proof switchgear solution (Premset) and complete the work within a strict three‑day window above a busy platform.

Schneider Electric supplied and installed Premset—an SF6‑free, compact, plug‑and‑play switchgear with a Harting connector—conducting most testing off-site at its Benalla factory so only critical commissioning was needed on site. The upgrade was completed within the required weekend timeframe, giving Sydney Trains Network greater operational flexibility (remote management and isolation), higher confidence in the network, significantly lower maintenance and ongoing operating costs, and a smart‑grid‑ready system to future‑proof operations.
