How EcoStruxure™ Power helps reduce the number of power system incidents through a new electrical substation

Queensland Rail, which operates passenger services across Queensland and handles nearly 51 million journeys a year, was experiencing power-system incidents that caused delays on its busy inner‑city network. With an expected 1.5 million extra visitors for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and only a 24‑square‑foot space available at Fortitude Valley station, Queensland Rail engaged Schneider Electric and its EcoStruxure™ Power platform to deliver a compact, highly reliable substation solution.

Schneider Electric designed, supplied and installed a prefabricated contained switchroom based on EcoStruxure Power — featuring 27.5 kV/200 A GHA gas‑insulated switchgear, MiCOM protection relays, a Gutor PXC industrial UPS in an LV Spacial SF cabinet, and Citect SCADA remote monitoring. The implementation reduced the number of power incidents affecting the inner‑city network, coped successfully with the extra 1.5 million Commonwealth Games passengers, lowered on‑site work and CapEx, reduced maintenance exposure, and improved on‑time running for Queensland Rail.
