How EcoStruxureTM for Metals enables sustainable electrical network modernization

ArcelorMittal’s Belval steelworks in Luxembourg faced an aging medium-voltage (MV) electrical installation that threatened safety, uptime and energy visibility. Seeking a sustainable modernization, ArcelorMittal engaged Schneider Electric to refurbish MV switchgear, add condition‑monitoring sensors, and replace/dispose of oil transformers in line with its circular‑economy goals using EcoStruxure for Metals and associated modernization services.

Schneider Electric conducted a Modernization Performance Safety (MPS) audit, retrofitted 13 MV devices, added temperature and hygrometry sensors (Easergy TH110), deployed EcoStruxure apps and edge tools for monitoring, and helped replace oil transformers with dry‑type units and manage compliant oil disposal. The project delivered an estimated 15–20% cost saving on the new installation, a 5–10% reduction in downtime, avoidance of about 170 equivalent metric tons of CO2 and 26 metric tons of materials, and improved reliability, energy visibility and predictive maintenance capabilities.
