Case Study: Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust improves patient tracking and inventory management with Scandit

A Scandit Case Study

NHS Scan4Safety programme enabled through Scandit’s mobile barcode scanning

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the UK’s largest acute hospital trusts, needed to improve product inventory and patient traceability as part of the NHS Scan4Safety programme. It was still relying on a mix of existing systems and handwritten notes, making it difficult to track products, patients, and locations efficiently across points of care.

Scandit provided the Barcode Scanner SDK, integrated with the Trust’s PPM+ electronic patient record, to enable fast mobile barcode scanning of patient wristbands, beds, clinics, theatres, and products. In a pilot on a breast care ward, staff strongly endorsed the solution; in one test area, product recall time dropped from over eight hours to 35 minutes, with costs reduced from at least £173 to £9. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is now planning a wider rollout, including location tracking across more than 800 devices.
