PeerJ, an open access publisher, adopted cloud infrastructure on Amazon Web Services to improve cost effectiveness, availability, and development velocity. The company found that building cloud-native applications would require new development practices and significant engineering time, reducing productivity and the return on its cloud investment.

Using Scalr’s cloud management platform, PeerJ automated autoscaling, infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, orchestration, and failover handling. Scalr helped PeerJ respond to traffic peaks and lulls, replace unhealthy instances, and support lifecycle management, allowing engineers to focus on product development; the company also reported two digit growth in transactions over 2013.
