NASA’s JPL governs their selfservice hybrid cloud with Scalr

The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) faced the challenge of managing a complex, mission-critical hybrid cloud infrastructure that needed to be both resilient for space exploration and elastic for public engagement, all while operating under government budgets. JPL required a uniform framework to manage their OpenStack private cloud and AWS public cloud, with capabilities for automation, autoscaling, and financial accountability. To meet this need, they implemented the Scalr cloud management platform.

The solution from Scalr provided a unified interface for JPL's hybrid cloud, enabling orchestration for unattended restarts and autoscaling, automatic resource tagging for cost allocation, and a simplified developer experience. This allowed JPL's focused IT team to efficiently manage infrastructure for over 150 AWS and 40 OpenStack developers. The results included reduced operational overhead, improved resilience against cloud disruptions, and empowered users with cost visibility, making Scalr a critical part of the US space program's infrastructure.
