Scality Ring Ensures That Rapidly Expanding Storage Capacity Is Easy To Handle

RTL interactive, the digital arm of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland that operates the RTL NOW VOD service (about 100 million video views per month), faced rapidly expanding storage needs driven by more devices, higher-resolution files and a growing catalog and user base. To meet strict SLAs for high read performance, resilience, large-file handling and multiple access methods, RTL interactive evaluated options and turned to Scality and its Scality RING software to scale storage quickly, cost‑effectively and reliably.

Scality deployed the Scality RING (Jan 2014) on HP Proliant servers with production and backup rings, ARC erasure coding, sparse-file handling and FUSE/CDMI connectors to integrate with Adobe Media Server and existing workflows. The Scality RING maintained required IOPS in POCs, never lost data during disk/server/network failures, and enabled simple capacity growth (capacity expected to grow 3x in 12 months and to support an estimated 22,000 movies / 16,000 hours of video), allowing RTL interactive to roll out new features faster while supporting its multi‑channel VOD services.
