Case Study: KADOKAWA Connected achieves stable, scalable live-stream storage and reduced TCO with Scality RING (Scality)

A Scality Case Study

Preview of the KADOKAWA Case Study

Scality enables seamless data streaming for a leading video-sharing platform in Japan

KADOKAWA, via its IT strategy subsidiary KADOKAWA Connected Inc., needed a highly performant, stable, and scalable storage system for live-stream data from niconico Live. Their existing vendor appliances were not scale-out, showed degraded performance as capacity grew, required lengthy repairs and heavy operational effort, so they selected Scality and its Scality RING software-defined storage to address these challenges.

KADOKAWA deployed Scality RING (with BroadBand Tower) as a nine-node IA server cluster (1.6PB physical / 1PB effective) in October 2019; Scality’s solution integrated with KADOKAWA’s monitoring, provided local Japanese support, and allowed node-by-node maintenance. The Scality deployment handled 6–7× peak streaming demand during the COVID surge without failing over to the standby system, reduced operations from about one person-month per month to under one person-day (saving the equivalent of one full-time employee), and delivered improved stability, scalability and lower TCO.
