RTL II shifts video archive into hyperscale with HPE and Scality

RTL II, a German TV station generating about 200 TB of new video content per year, needed a simpler, petabyte‑scale archive to replace its overloaded SGI DMF system and to handle future 4K workflows. To meet this challenge it selected Scality’s software-defined storage—Scality RING—together with HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 servers to achieve the scalability and performance required.

The vendor deployed Scality RING on 18 HPE ProLiant SL4540 servers (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) with replication across three data centers, enabling RTL II to scale beyond 3.5 PB in a footprint 50% smaller than the previous solution. Scality’s solution cut transfer time tenfold (a 40 GB movie now moves in 6.5 minutes versus 60–70 minutes), allowed a three‑day self-install, improved online delivery and last‑minute broadcast updates, and ensured continued availability and business continuity.
